Sustainability Goes Mainstream as CEOs Take Charge

Imagine walking into a company meeting and hearing the CEO say, ‘Our future depends on how green we go.’ That’s not a fantasy anymore—it’s happening at boardrooms around the world. Corporate sustainability is no longer just a buzzword; it’s a business reality, and the latest trends show companies are stepping up in real, measurable ways.

More Transparency Than Ever According to the OECD’s 2025 Global Corporate Sustainability Report, 91% of the world’s biggest companies now share sustainability information with the public. That means if you’re investing in or working for a major firm, chances are they’re telling you how they’re tackling climate change, emissions, and even human rights. The energy sector is leading the pack, but even real estate is catching up. Still, there’s room for improvement—only about 17% of companies have their sustainability reports checked by independent experts, and tracking emissions from suppliers (Scope 3) remains a challenge.

Weather Warnings Hit Home It’s not just about reports and promises. The MSCI Corporate Resilience Survey found that over 80% of companies have already felt the impact of extreme weather—think floods, storms, and heatwaves disrupting supply chains and operations. This isn’t a distant threat; it’s happening now, and businesses are scrambling to adapt. From tech giants to food producers, companies are investing in resilience, whether that means building stronger facilities or diversifying where they source materials.

CEOs Step Up Perhaps the biggest shift is in leadership. A new UN Global Compact study shows that 88% of global CEOs now believe sustainability is not just good for the planet, but good for business. They’re moving from talk to action, even amid economic uncertainty. The study highlights five priorities: working with regulators, responding to consumer demand, using new tech like AI and renewables, upskilling employees, and leading with purpose. As one CEO put it, ‘We have the tools. What we need is the courage to act.’

What’s Next? While progress is real, the road ahead is bumpy. Only about a third of global sustainability goals are on track, and companies still need to improve how they measure and report their impact. But the message is clear: sustainability is no longer a side project. It’s central to how companies survive, grow, and earn trust in today’s world.
