Imagine a world where saving the planet isn’t just a noble goal, but a smart business move. That’s exactly what’s happening in 2025. More and more companies aren’t just talking about sustainability—they’re weaving it into the very fabric of their operations, and it’s paying off in surprising ways.
Big Companies Are Going All In
According to a recent report by Accenture, nearly a third of the world’s 4,000 largest companies have set full net-zero targets, covering everything from their own offices to their supply chains. That’s up for the fourth year in a row. What’s even more impressive? These companies aren’t just checking boxes. They’re finding that going green actually helps their bottom line. Since 2016, the biggest companies have grown their revenues by about 7 percent a year, while keeping their emissions flat. In other words, they’re growing without polluting more—a feat that used to seem impossible.
But here’s the reality check: only 16 percent of these companies are actually on track to hit net-zero by 2050. The rest are still figuring out how to make it happen. Still, the momentum is clear—sustainability is no longer a side project, it’s a business priority.
Sustainability Teams Are Now Standard
Another sign that sustainability is going mainstream? Most companies now have a dedicated team or role for it. A 2025 survey found that 80 percent of organizations have someone whose job is to focus on sustainability. That’s a big jump from just a few years ago, when it was often just a side responsibility for someone in another department.
But there’s still a catch. Many of these teams are still relying on spreadsheets to track their progress. Only about 38 percent are fully reporting under the new EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which means a lot of companies still have work to do when it comes to data and transparency.
AI Is Changing the Game
Technology is playing a bigger role than ever. Take Kyndryl, a global IT company, which found that companies using AI to manage their sustainability efforts are seeing real results. For example, some are using AI to predict energy use and emissions, then automatically making adjustments to save money and reduce their environmental impact.
“It’s about optimizing operations by prevention, not reaction,” says Faith Taylor, Kyndryl’s Senior Vice President for Global Citizenship and Sustainability. Instead of waiting for problems to arise, companies are using AI to spot issues before they happen, like high energy use or waste. This isn’t just about being green—it’s about being smart and efficient.
The Data Challenge
One of the biggest hurdles for companies is data. Many are still using old-school methods like spreadsheets, which makes it hard to get a clear picture of their sustainability performance. And while regulations are pushing companies to report more, only about half of sustainability leaders say they can prove the business value of their efforts. That’s the next frontier: linking sustainability data directly to business results, so it’s not just a feel-good story, but a measurable part of the company’s success.
Real-World Impact
These trends aren’t just happening in boardrooms—they’re making a difference on the ground. For example, companies are using AI to cut energy use in their data centers, which not only saves money but also reduces emissions. Others are rethinking their supply chains to be more circular, using recycled materials and reducing waste.
The bottom line? Sustainability is no longer just about doing the right thing. It’s about staying competitive, innovating, and growing in a world that’s running out of time to adapt. Companies that get this are finding new ways to thrive, while those that don’t risk falling behind.
