Navigating the New CSRD Landscape: A Guide for Businesses

Understanding the CSRD Omnibus Package

The European Commission recently introduced its ‘Omnibus I Package’, aimed at simplifying sustainability reporting requirements for businesses. This package brings significant changes to the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) that companies need to be aware of:

Delayed Reporting Timelines: The second and third waves of companies now have an additional two years to prepare for compliance. This gives affected businesses more time to get their sustainability reporting processes in order.

Revised Scope: The threshold for mandatory reporting has been increased to companies with over 1,000 employees and either €50 million in net turnover or a €25 million balance sheet total. This change is estimated to exclude about 80% of companies previously falling under CSRD.

Exemptions for SMEs: Small and medium-sized enterprises are now exempt from mandatory CSRD reporting, though voluntary standards will be available.

Changes for Non-EU Companies: The turnover threshold for non-EU companies to fall under CSRD has been raised to €450 million in annual EU turnover.

Practical Steps for CSRD Compliance

  1. Assess Your Reporting Status: Determine if your company still falls under the new CSRD thresholds.

  2. Update Your Timeline: If you’re still required to report, adjust your compliance roadmap to align with the new deadlines.

  3. Review Reporting Standards: Familiarize yourself with the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) that will guide your disclosures.

  4. Enhance Data Collection: Implement robust systems to gather and validate sustainability data across your organization.

  5. Engage Stakeholders: Ensure your board, management, and relevant departments understand the new requirements and their roles in compliance.

By staying informed and proactive, businesses can turn CSRD compliance from a regulatory burden into a strategic opportunity for enhancing sustainability practices and stakeholder trust.
