EU Proposes Major Simplifications to Sustainability Reporting Rules

The European Commission has adopted proposals for significant simplifications to the EU’s landmark sustainability reporting regulations, in a move aimed at easing compliance burdens on businesses. The proposed changes come in response to concerns from smaller companies struggling with complex and sometimes conflicting environmental rules, as well as broader economic pressures.

Key simplifications in the ‘omnibus’ package include:

  • Streamlining disclosure requirements across different sustainability directives
  • Extending implementation deadlines for certain provisions
  • Reducing reporting frequency for some metrics
  • Clarifying definitions and methodologies to improve consistency

While maintaining the core objectives of enhancing corporate sustainability transparency, the Commission argues these pragmatic adjustments are necessary given the changing global economic landscape. The simplification package will now be considered by the European Parliament and Council. If approved, it could significantly reshape the EU’s approach to sustainability reporting and disclosure requirements for companies across the bloc.
